How do I convert units by typing?
Write a number, the unit you have, the word “to” and the unit you want: 10 kg to lbs. You can mix units (5 ft 9 in to cm), use fractions (1 1/2 cups to ml) and symbols (5'9" to cm). If you leave out the target, the converter picks the usual counterpart, so “72 inches” becomes centimeters.
Which units does it understand?
Length (mm to miles and nautical miles), weight (mg to tons, including stone), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin), volume (mL to US and imperial gallons, cups and spoons), area (square inches to square miles, acres and hectares), speed, data size (decimal and binary) and time. Time zones have their own converter.
Where do the conversion factors come from?
From the exact definitions published by NIST: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg and 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L). Label measures follow the FDA rule in 21 CFR 101.9 and cup weights come from USDA FoodData Central. Each result links to its source and shows the date we checked it.
Why can I not convert cups straight to grams in the bar?
Because a cup measures space and a gram measures mass, and every ingredient packs differently: a cup of all-purpose flour weighs 125 g, a cup of granulated sugar 200 g and a cup of honey 339 g in USDA data. The cups to grams converter asks for the ingredient first.
How precise are the answers?
The math uses the exact factors with full floating-point precision, then shows 6 significant digits. That is far more than a ruler or kitchen scale can measure. For trade, engineering or medical dosing, confirm the figure in the official source.
Can I convert a whole column of numbers from a spreadsheet?
Yes. The category pages and the single-pair pages (cm to inches, kg to lbs and so on) have a batch box under the converter: copy the column in Excel or Google Sheets, paste it, and copy the converted column back. Results come one per line in the same order, so they line up with your rows. You choose the rounding, and a decimal comma if your sheet uses one.
Is the converter free? Does it store what I type?
