500 megabytes =

0.5GB

Formula: GB = MB ÷ 1,000

Show the steps
  1. Definition: 1 MB = 10⁶ B = 1 000 000 B; 1 GB = 10⁹ B
  2. 500 MB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 GB

Definitions used: 1 MB = 10⁶ B = 1 000 000 B; 1 GB = 10⁹ B.

How to convert megabytes to gigabytes

Divide the value in megabytes by 1,000. The factor follows from the definitions: 1 MB = 10⁶ B = 1 000 000 B, and 1 GB = 10⁹ B.

GB = MB ÷ 1,000

Worked example: 500 MB to GB

  1. Definition: 1 MB = 10⁶ B = 1 000 000 B; 1 GB = 10⁹ B
  2. 500 MB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 GB
  3. Answer: 500 MB = 0.5 GB.

Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

With SI prefixes, 1 GB is 1,000 MB (10⁹ bytes); this is what storage makers print on drives. Memory has traditionally been counted in powers of two, where 1,024 units make the next one. To end the ambiguity the IEC created binary prefixes: 1 GiB (gibibyte) = 1,024 MiB = 2³⁰ bytes. NIST describes both on its binary prefixes page.

Why does a 500 GB drive show less space on my computer?

The label counts decimal gigabytes, 500 × 10⁹ bytes. A system that counts in binary units reports the same bytes as 465.66 GiB, about 7% less, and may still print “GB” next to the number. Nothing is missing; the unit changed.

More questions about megabytes and gigabytes

How many GB is 1,024 MB?

In decimal units, 1,024 MB is 1.024 GB. In binary units, 1,024 MiB is exactly 1 GiB.

How many MB are in 2 GB?

2 GB is 2,000 MB. 2 GiB is 2,048 MiB.

What is the difference between MB and Mb?

MB is megabytes, used for file sizes. Mb is megabits, used for connection speeds. By the usual convention a byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mb/s moves about 12.5 MB each second.

How many bytes is 1 MB?

One megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. One mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes.
