How do you convert between time zones?
Every zone is written as a distance from UTC, the world reference clock. Take the local time, remove the offset of the starting city to get UTC, then add the offset of the destination.
Worked example: 9:00 AM in New York on July 15 is UTC−4 (daylight time), so it is 1:00 PM UTC. London is at UTC+1 on that date, which gives 2:00 PM in London, 5 hours ahead. In January both cities are on standard time (UTC−5 and UTC+0), and the gap is still 5 hours.
The offsets move on different dates in different countries, and some places never change their clocks. That is why the converter asks for the date: it looks up the rule in force on that day instead of assuming a fixed gap.
Time zone questions
How do I convert a time to another time zone?
Choose the date, the time and the city you are starting from, then the city you want. The converter shows the matching local time, the date there and how many hours apart the two places are on that day.
Does the converter handle daylight saving time?
Yes. It uses the time zone rules stored in your browser for the date you picked, so New York is 5 hours behind London for most of the year and 4 hours behind during the weeks when only one of them has changed its clocks.
What is the difference between EST and EDT?
EST is Eastern Standard Time, 5 hours behind UTC, used in winter. EDT is Eastern Daylight Time, 4 hours behind UTC, used in summer. Choosing a city such as New York instead of an abbreviation avoids picking the wrong one.
What is UTC?
Coordinated Universal Time is the reference clock that every time zone is defined against, written as UTC+1, UTC−5 and so on. It does not change for daylight saving.
Why do some places differ by half an hour?
Not every zone is a whole number of hours from UTC. India is UTC+5:30, so when it is noon in London in winter it is 5:30 PM in Mumbai.
